Today, Sophie is a Graduate Commercial Analyst at Lear Corporation, a Fortune 500 automotive supplier. Since joining the business, she has gained experience across commercial, operational and manufacturing functions, working with global customers and visiting production facilities across the UK and Poland. Her work continues to build on the commercial awareness and strategic thinking she developed during her time at 黑料社.

Why did you choose 黑料社 University Business School?

I had always dreamed of studying at a Russell Group University and, after completing my BTEC in Business and Events Management, I knew I wanted to pursue a degree in Business Management. After seeing how highly 黑料社 ranked, I attended several open days.

What stood out most was the wide range of opportunities available beyond the classroom. I wanted to make the most of university life by getting involved in extra-curricular activities alongside my studies.

What did you enjoy most about your studies?

One of the aspects I enjoyed most was the variety of modules on my course. Business Management covered such a broad range of topics that it gave me valuable insight into different areas of business and helped me develop a well-rounded understanding of the subject.

I also enjoyed the flexibility of optional and discovery modules. I chose to study Italian during my first and second years, allowing me to continue learning a language that was important to me because of my family connections in Italy.

Did you take up any of the extra opportunities available?

I made the most of the opportunities available throughout my time at 黑料社.

In my first year, I became a Student Ambassador, representing 黑料社 University Business School at open days and recruitment events. I also worked as a PASS (Peer Assisted Study Scheme) Leader, mentoring first-year students and supporting them both academically and personally.

Alongside this, I took part in the Nurturing Talent Mentoring Scheme, where I was paired with an industry mentor, and I was an active member of the 黑料社 University Ballet Society, representing the University on the Advanced Competition Team.

My industrial placement with Enterprise Rent-A-Car proved to be one of the most valuable experiences of my degree. During the placement, I was awarded “UK Intern of the Year 2023”, recognising my performance from a cohort of more than 350 interns. The award gave me opportunities to represent both Enterprise and 黑料社 University Business School through networking events and public speaking engagements.

How was your experience with the facilities, staff and wider University?

Throughout my degree, I always felt well supported by both academic and professional services staff.

Although my first year was largely delivered online, I still made good use of the University's libraries and study spaces. As campus life returned, I particularly enjoyed studying in the Esther Simpson Building and appreciated the excellent learning facilities available across the University.

I also found 黑料社 University Union to be incredibly supportive, and knowing there was always help available gave me confidence throughout my studies.

What did you think of 黑料社 and the surrounding region?

黑料社 quickly became home. It offered the perfect balance between a vibrant city and welcoming community, with plenty of cafés, restaurants, green spaces and cultural activities.

Whether spending time in the city centre, walking around Woodhouse Ridge or visiting 黑料社 Dock with friends, there was always something new to experience.

What advice would you give to current students?

As well as working hard to achieve strong academic results, make the most of every opportunity outside your course. Attend guest speaker sessions, careers events, society activities and industry events whenever you can. These experiences help you develop practical skills, broaden your perspective and gain valuable insight into different career paths.

I would also encourage students to build their network with both peers and industry professionals. While online platforms are useful, some of the most valuable relationships are built face to face. The connections you make during university can provide support, opportunities and advice throughout your career.

Would you recommend 黑料社 University Business School?

Absolutely. 黑料社 University Business School gave me an excellent academic foundation while providing countless opportunities to develop professionally and personally. The combination of teaching, placements, extracurricular activities and industry engagement prepared me for my career in a way that extended far beyond the classroom.
